The electromagnetic damper studied in this paper belongs to a special kind of coreless generator, which is used for the energy absorption and dissipation in order to weaken vibration. The electromagnetic damper has high absorption energy-weight ratio and some unique advantages, so it has been widely used in aerospace, aviation, electricity and many other fields.The torque-speed characteristic of an electromagnetic damper affects the energy absorption and dissipation. However, there are only a few relevant references about the calculation of torque-speed ratio, and in which there are still some differences. In this paper, the electromagnetic analysis software used to study the electromagnetic damper simulation model is introduced, the relationships between the damping torque and the structure parameters of stator and rotor are simulated and analyzed.The development and application of the conventional coreless generator and electromagnetic damper are introduced at the beginning of this paper. Furthermore, a two-dimensional model of the electromagnetic damper is set up using software Maxwell SV of Ansoft Company to simulate stationary magnet field, when the magnetizing direction, arc coefficient and the number of magnetic pole-pairs are changed respectively, the waveforms and mean values of the magnetic flux density in the air-gap are compared. Using software MagNet of Infolytica Corporation, the two-dimensional model of the electromagnetic damper is built to study its torque-speed characteristic. In detail, the simulation study is as the follows: (1) The effects of structure parameters of stator such as magnet material, magnet magnetizing direction, magnetic pole-pairs on the torque-speed characteristic are researched; (2) The influences of structure parameters of rotor such as rotor length, rotor material, rotor thickness and the average rotor diameter on the torque-speed characteristic are analyzed.
