Follow The Poetic Technical Beauty Of Timber-Structure

From thousands of years ago up till now, timber, cluntch and stone are people's favourite architectural materials. However, since the 1950's, all of the architects have focused their attention on concret , steel and compound materials, thus have ignored the uses of tiomber . In allusion to this phenomenon, the purpose of the thesis is to reveal that timber-work is never the fatacy for the minority of the architects but containing more far-reaching meanings.Timber, as one of a kind of natual building materials, gives the relations between human and the nature.Architecture exists as the result of construction while construction is thematerialization of architect's thinking. This thesis initiates the research on timber-structure architecture from the perspective of architectural expressing, and thenprobes the logic relation between material and form, which leads tocontemplation on the architectural forms based on the particular materialfeatures of wood. On the basis of tracking back the development history of traditional timber-structure techonology and aesthete, the essay carries on the study from three aspects of materialexpressing, structural expressing and constructional expressing.The thesis choosed the contemporary representative timber-work as the example to carry on classified research ,mainly conserning this six aspects ------- structure, skin, aesthete , district context, ecology architecture, and origingal nature. Meanwhile the essay analyzes the technical and aesthetic notion involved in timber-structure architecture,and then try to search for the design methods to develop the expressing ability of timber-structure architecture with analysis on several basic points of it .Scanning renewedly the contemporary timber-structure building from the view of techonology conception. and then this essay prospected the huge potential of timber-structure techonology.The historical problem of How to inherit and develop the glories of traditional Chinese timber-structure architecure was discussed in the last chapter, to which also be faced urgenly by Chinese architects in this new time.
