The slab-column structure is a girderless floor system. In the structure, floor loads are transferred directly from floor to bases by columns. The separation program of the structure is flexible and the application of the structure can reduce storey height and total height of buildings, so it is a proper and efficient structure system when there is needed, and has found wide application in building. Unfortunately, so far structure engineers have many different opinions on the working performance, failure mechanism, failure form and failure characters of slab-column structures because of the limitation of theoretical basis, engineering practice level, experiment condition and many other factors. There are two puzzles exist that concerning the analysis and calculation of slab-column structures, one is the application of equivalent frame method, and the other is the calculation of the ultimate capacity of slab-column connections. Further application of slab-column structures is discouraged because of the problems that mentioned above. To have a system study on slab-column structures' performance under lateral action, a test on a two-storey two-bay slab-column building and analysis of it with finite element method had been done.Firstly, the ultimate capacity of slab-column connections had been calculated with FEM: many factors including concrete strength, ration of reinforcement, load form, boundary constraint condition, post cap and the relationship between vertical shear force and unbalanced moment had been analyzed on the influence on the ultimate bending capacity and punching capacity of slab-column connections. A practical method that can identify the two failure forms of slab-column connections had been summarized.Secondly, one two-storey two-bay slab-column building had been made-up and had been tested for nonlinear static analysis. The development of concrete cracks of the building under lateral actions had been observed; the deformation and the strain of the building had been measured and studied; rules of the building's deformation, strain distribution and allocation of unbalanced moment between column-strip and middle span-strip had been analyzed.At last, nonlinear static analysis of the slab-column building had been done by three-dimension solid FEM and spatial equivalent frame method. Then a comparison had been done between the test results and the theoretical results. Working mechanismof slab-column structures under lateral actions had been concluded. At last, the practicability of three-dimension solid FEM and spatial equivalent frame method in analysis of slab-column system had been proved.
