As the increasing demand on the specific impulse and thrust in the SRM is made, the high energetic characteristic of metal is gradually attached importance to. Especially, the application prospect of metal in underwater propulsion system is considerable. In this paper, the flow and thermal performance in SRM with high metal content were studied. The two-phase flow with the high particle load is mainly characteristic in SRM with high metal content. In the paper, the two-phase theory was introduced firstly. Secondly, the effect of the different particle sizes and mass fractions on the two-phase flow was simulated by employing several models in the FLUENT. The nozzle two-phase loss due to the different particle mass fractions was analyzed. Through all the above, the qualitative explanation about the two-phase flow and the nozzle loss were clearly given. In the paper, the high energetic characteristic of the reaction between magnesium/aluminum and water was demonstrated by thermal computation. In addition, the difficulty in the reaction was analyzed elementarily. At last, by comparing the thermal performance of the several propellants, it was concluded that the oxygen-poor propellants with the high metal content had better overall performance and could be applied feasibly in the underwater propulsion system.
