With the fast development of our society, more and more skyscraping structures are constructed for industry, transportation and communication construction. Such as broadcasts and television towers, communication towers and chimneys, they are tall and slender structure. The P-Δeffect of the lateral displacement caused by the deadweight and the loads on the top is too large to be ignored. So the P-Δeffect of the skyscraping structures are concerned by more and more people day by day.Communication tower is a kind of tall and slender structure with cone-shaped cross-section. Under the action of both the lateral and the erect loads, large displacement will happy on them. The P-Δeffect of such structures is noticeable. Code for Design of Mobile Communication Steel Towers and masts prescribes that it should consider the P-Δeffect on the displacement of the tower body in the structural calculation for communication single-pipe tower.To calculate the P-Δeffect, the non-linear FEM is viable and developed.However, for engineering design, to find a direct and simple way to calculate the P-Δeffect does make sense. There are many methods to calculate the P-Δeffect, approximate ones and accurate ones. But they have their deficiencies. The purpose of this paper is to find a better method to calculate the P-Δeffect of the lateral displacement. At the beginning, in order to bring the conception of calculating the P-Δeffect by energy method. Then analyses the P-Δeffect on complex structure with complex loads, and infer a formula for calculating the maximal displacement based on energy principle. After that, a calculation process for an engineering case is shown to prove the validity and the accuracy of the method. At last, an ANSYS analysis for the case is proposed.The research inferred that: the method of calculating the P-Δeffect based on energy principle is proper and accurate. To calculate the P-Δeffect on complex structure with complex loads, energy method is an effective one.
