On July 1st, 2006, the rule of "The protection of the passengers in automobile during side collision" (GB 20071-2006) was formally implemented. One of the dummies used in the side impact rule test is the ES-2 dummy. It has good anthropopathic integrality. It is an important work to correctly evaluate and ensure the anthropopathic integrality of crash dummy in the automotive crash test. The correctly calibration of the crash dummy is one of the key measures to assure dummy's anthropopathic integrality.The aim of this paper is to develop a set of calibration system for side impact dummy. The basic theory of Crash Biomechanics and its applications in side crash were summarized, and the mechanical performance and structure character of the dummy were analyzed. Then, the theoretic bases of dummy's calibration system were discussed and the relations between Crash Biomechanics and dummy's calibration system developed were analyzed.According as above, a set of calibration system for side crash dummy had been developed with self-design and manufacture and the key calibration parts ordered. The system had been validated by comparing with some test data. The major work included the choice and fixing of the key calibration parts, the design and manufacture of the test equipments, summarize of dummy's calibration process and the solve of the key problems in calibration system.Based on the calibration system for side crash dummies, the corresponding simulation models had been developed and validated by the calibration tests. By changing calibration parameters, different response of the dummy can be gotten and analyzed, which can be used to improve the calibration system.After that, the ES-2 side impact test dummy was calibrated by this system. By changing some parts, other kinds of side test dummy can also be calibrated using this system.The dummy's calibration system has the characteristics of economy, practicality, universal and stability and can be widely used.
