Arch dam is an important type of dam, because of its high safety, good economic indicators and widely used in China. However, as complex structure of arch dam and the uncertainty of geological conditions, we know there are still a certain lacks about it. In these issues abutment stability is an important research topic. Based on the finite element simulation software MSC.MARC, this article researches the integral stability safety of Jinping first grade ultra-high arch dam abutment rock.The specific details are as follows:1.The research situation and the latest progress of Arch Dam are introduced and the research methods of arch dam are described;2.The basic theory and method of the nonlinear finite element calculating in hydraulic structure are explained and the solving method of the abutment stability safety factor and the instability criterion are introduced;3. The software of MSC.MARC is introduced,and the material yield criterion, Water load calculation and the initial stress field simulation, and other issues which are encountered when we analyze hydraulic structure by using the MSC.MARC software are simply researched, and an example of the simulation method of the bedrock self-weight stress field is researched;4.The 3-D nonlinear FEM analysis model of the Jinping first grade arch dam is built by the software MSC.MARC, and the two programs of the left bank abutment processed or not are mainly researched. The stress, displacement, yield areas of the dam body ,the abutment and the foundation are analysed, and the integral stbility safety evaluation of the arch dam abutment rock are calculated by the over loading law and the strength dropping method, and the results of this paper is compared with the results of the document's which the left abutment was not processed .The reason of the left abutment be treated and the feasibility to do so are indicated. We hope that it was helpful for the structure design, construction and similar projects.
