The synchrotron radiation, which is a kind of outstanding X ray source, is an almost the only research tool in the front research of many fields. With the high requirement of its characteristics, the capability and varieties of the magnets which produce the synchrotron radiation are continuously reformed. On the basis of much unique characteristics, the multipole permanent magnetic wiggler becomes an economic and effective insertion device which can be used for advancing the synchrotron radiation.This paper is based on the projects of construction of for upgraded Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF),which name is"The Research and Design of the Mutipole Permanent Magnetic Wiggler". The characteristics of synchrotron radiation output from the multipole wiggler magnet were summarized, and calculating formulas of correlative parameters were presented. Influences of the multipole wiggler magnet on the stability of electron beams were briefly analyzed.According to the designing requirement of the multipole permanent magnetic wiggler which was presented by the synchrotron radiation and accelerator. Physical design and optimizing methods, as well as its designing principle and traits were discussed. The framework parts used for bearing the main loads were analyzed in order that the integral structure strength meets the required mechanical precisions. The magnetic field measurements including single permanent magnetic bolcks measurement and whole wiggler magnet measurement were finished, and their analyzing results were presented.Through the analyses of synchrotron radiation characteristics ,and the measurement of mechanic structure precisions, as well as the magnetic field measurement, the multipole permanent magnetic wiggler is obtained that both its physical and structural designs gain project's ends.
