This paper focuses on optimal design for given layout of sewer networks. Because the best layout of a sewer system is usually tree-shaped, the theory of tree-shaped structure can be applied to sewer network.Matlab programming language and related techniques have grown up to be the most important programming tools because of matlab's excellent features. By analyzing the nonlinear characteristics of the object cost function of sewer network and studying the usual methods of optimizing the hydraulic parameters, so the cost equation of anhui province and the method for the nonlinear parameters estimation by the matlab genetic algorithm and direct search toolbox(GADS) is proposed, and it can obtain optimization with its merit of universal and accurate result.The essay adopts direct optimization since various limits on sewage network, occasional change on topography, and direct, easy-looking, and effortless examing characteristic on direct optimization. Dual optimization is one of the direct and it mainly focuses on optimizing sewer network from two aspects, namely to choose velocity of flow as slow as possible and speed of filling as fast as possible with the precondition of meeting various limits on sewer network. So the enumerating standard diameter method based on feasible-diameter is proposed, and by adapting the optimization method and using MATLAB language to workout a thorough designing program.Finally, this model is verified by its application on engineering project of the binhu sewer network. The results of the study show that it can save the engineering cost about 9.81% using this method to do the optimal design of sewer network system and has certain practical value in the optimal design of engineering.
