The intake and exhaust noise of automotive engine is one of main noise sources of automobile noise. The most effective measure to control intake and exhaust noise is using muffler in intake and exhaust system. Designing a muffler with high anechoic performance and low resistance loss has become an important subject on intake and exhaust noise control.A complex muffler consists of several basic anechoic constructions. With the large-scale finite element software ANSYS, the professional acoustic software SYSNOISE and the fluid dynamic software FLUENT, the computation and analysis of numerical simulation of acoustic performance, aerodynamic performance and dynamic characteristics of basic anechoic units are carried out in this thesis through a comprehensive application of the finite element method, finite volume method and modal analysis. Then the influence of different structural parameters on the performance of muffler is further analyzed.Based on those, the paper makes analysis on the acoustic field and the flow field of muffler mounted on a light truck, then it brings forward and analyzes an improved design. The results show that the major performances of the muffler in the improved design are enhanced compared with the original construction. The numerical simulation of intake and exhaust muffler in this thesis can provide reference and new method for muffler design. It is of important instructional significance for improving the design and analysis of muffler.
