High- voltage transmission line is the weaker part of the power systems. How to avoid the flashovers on high- voltage transmission line and lightning tipping is a big question to the power systems. However the differentiation of lightning shielding failure accidents and back flashover accidents on high- voltage transmission line is more important. Only by correctly completed judgment, lightning protection of the power system can be targeted to success. In this paper basing on the theory of shielding failure, back flashover and the principle of measuring lightning parameters using tapes, the testing equipment of magnetic card are fixed on the different positions of the tower. So the lightning parameters such as lightning supreme steepness and lightning peak current are received. By the analyses of the data, we can get the new way of the differentiation of shielding failure and back flashover, and then gives the model emulations by EMTP. At last takes forward to the basic theory and model formulation of the real-time differentiation system of shielding failure and back flashover.The first part discusses the principle of lightning shielding failure and back flashover, analyze the present status and significance of differentiating shielding failure and back flashover.In the second part, basing on the theory of shielding failure and back flashover, take up the model of lightning shielding failure and back flashover. Then takes forward to the differentiating measurement method and gives the model emulations by EMTP.In the third part, analyze the principle of measuring lightning parameters using tapes in detail and undertake the error analysis. Take the analysis of feasibility study of lightning shielding failure and back flashover .Discusses the problems in the testing. Fourthly takes forward to the program, flow sheet and model of the real-time differentiation system of shielding failure and back flashover.The fifth is conclusion of this paper.The sixth is the expectation and the suggestion to related questionAs the result of the simulation and testing, the date of the lightning shielding failure and back flashover is different clearly. The design mind is distinct. This paper provides a new differentiating measurement of shielding failure and back flashover. The above method bases on reality, also convenient, therefore it is worth promoting the application.
