As national economy's development, the modern highway transportation is characterized with high speed, high traffic density, heavy load and channelized traffic. At present, reinforcing service performance of asphalt pavement, improving its life-span and increasing investment benefits become very important for worldwide transport departments. Therefore, many methods have been developed to improve the performance of asphalt pavement, such as the SMA, Super Performance Asphalt Pavement (Superpeve), modified asphalt, etc.. In addition to these, the fiber is a successful alternative in asphalt pavement for its eminent performance, simple construction technology, and economical preponderance. The study of this thesis is supported by the Administration of Sui-Yue-Zhong Highway Construction, Hubei, China. Firstly, the thesis focused on the analyses and comparison of performance of all raw materials used in this project (including aggregates, asphalt and fibers). Then, usual design methods of different gradation types including AC, SMA, Superpave, Porous Asphalt (PA) etc. were researched and analyzed. On the basis above, new design PA design method and performance criteria was made. The performances of four types of mixtures with different fibers, such as cellulose, polyester etc. were investigated. Furthermore, influences of the types and contents of different fibers on the internal law were comprehensively analyzed, using Marshall testing; system analyses of influence of the fibers on the thermal stability of asphalt pavement were made by rutting testing; through UTM dynamic testing system, fatigue performances of the original and modified asphalt mixtures were investigated. The research results indicate that the fibers can improve the combination properties of asphalt mixtures. Nevertheless, they exhibit different cost performance ratio depending on the gradation type of mixture; the use of modified asphalt can enhance the fatigue life of the mixture, however fatigue properties of the mixtures suffered the real distress, such as asphalt ageing will be researched in future.
