The contact problem is a kind of common, complicated and typical non-linear problem. Regardless of joint problem in the hydraulic engineering or interaction problem between the rock engineering structure and the rock body, the key of solution is studying the contact relation and analytical method. The basic theory and numeric analysis methods of discontinuous deformation and contact problem were deeply studied in this paper. Then the Multi-body FEM was applied to calculate the contact problem of longitudinal joint of gravity dam. The main contents can be shown as follows:(1)By reading a great deal of literatures, the state of the development of domestic and overseas discontinuous deformation analysis and contact problem were basically mastered, and the merits and demerits of existing numerical analysis methods of discontinuous deformation were analyzed and commented. Based on the theory of DDA, combined FEM with multi-body system's mechanical theory in classical mechanics, the Multi-body FEM was applied to solve the planar contact problem with gap.(2)With the basic theory of force method and displacement method, through the interconnection of force and reaction force among the deformable bodies, and combined the condition of displacement compatibility with balance equation, the control equation of the contact problem was created, and the calculating program of the Multi-body FEM was programmed in FORTRAN. And then the feasibility of the method of Multi-body FEM and the rationality of the program were verified by examples.(3)By using the method of Multi-body FEM in the study of working state of gravity dam with cracked longitudinal joint, the variation rule of longitudinal joint with time was given and its effect on security of the dam was studied. In this way, a relative satisfied result was derived.
