IR radiant cooling coating (IRC) is a kind of functional coating that can reflect most of the solar energy in the near-infrared region of the solar spectrum, moreover the coating itself has a high emittance in middle-far IR band, therefore it can prevent the surface temperature of coatings as well as the enclosed interior surroundings from being heated up without the consumption of energy. IRC exhibits great potential in the application as coatings for vehicles, exterior wall of buildings and oil containers to prevent excessive internal temperature rise by keeping the surface cool.According to the principles of radiant cooling, studies of this paper were concentrated on the key influencing factors of IR radiant cooling coating (IRC), such as the species of the film, the refractive index of the reflective materials and the emissivity of the radiant materials. Anionic/nonionic emulsifier as complex emulsifier system, a research of high solid micro-emulsion polymerization was made. Function of Gemini emulsifiers (self-prepared) as anionic emulsifier in emulsion for coatings and adhesives was described by the process of seeded micro-emulsion polymerization initiated by the initiator ammonium persulfate (APS). It was found that Gemini emulsifiers are very effective in micro-emulsion polymerization, providing typical colloid particle size control, and excellent stability of the emulsion. With only about 1% content, high solid-content (about 40%) and small particle diameters (about 31nm) transparent copolymer latexes were attained.The influential factors against emulsion polymerization, including polymerization method, emulsifier, etc, were discussed. In order to improve the reflective ability of functional materials and enhance the emittance in far IR band, the frostings were enveloped by titanium dioxide and the functional materials were disposed by calcine. Therefore it can decrease the exterior temperature of the coating film efficiently. When white material WG5:WG1:WG4 is 1:3:1, the difference in temperature was 6.2℃. When coloured material WG3:WG2:WG4 is 10:1:4, the difference in temperature was 3.7℃.The prescription of the coatings was researched through different fillers and find out the appropriate white series and the dark series prescription. Finally the influence of the thickness of the film and the colors and the solid content was measured by means of a simulated model under the IR light.Synthesis of all the studies and the results shows that IRC provides an effective way to decrease the temperature of surface and internal surroundings .Consequently it ameliorate the life and work conditions in the buildings and save the energy. Along with the increase of the energy consumption and the price, the research and application of this kind coating have great economy benefit, environment benefit and social benefit, and its future is bright.
