Embankment dam with the advantage of saving investment, fast construction and wideadaptation of geological conditions, is one of important kind of dam to develope. In westernconstruction of hydroelectric power, high rockfill dam wall occupies an important position.Core rockfill dam including impermeable wall, the filter layer, layer, the main rockfill districtand sub-district rockfills. Because of all the dams material properties are different, the costvaries greatly. In condition of meeting dam safety and structural requirements of the premise,how to optimize dam material subarea to save investment is an important issue.In this paper, there are some researchs about material subareas optimization for highrockfill dams with core wall. Target function, design variables , nature state restrains ,Optimize methods are studied.Taking Nuozhadu's earth core rockfill dam as example, thereare six alterations. Their comparations are in following aspects:1st, NO.2 dam materialutilization ratio; 2nd, dam body subsides; 3rd, the stress and strain of dam body;4th,earthquake resistance; 5th, stability of dam slope; 6th, costruction condition. At the aspectof stability of dam slope, the fifith one and the sixth one are safe. At the aspect of constructioncosts, the fifith one is is minimal.The forth one is difficult in costruction condition.Finally, an intelligence optimization algorithm-convergence improved particle swarmoptimization and broad sense inheritance algorithm have been introduced. No.2 dam materialutilization ratio is the target function, under the premise that the boundary is restriced in thecorewall. At result, convergence improved particle swarm optimization is proved to be betterthan broad sense inheritance algorithm.The result gained by convergence improved particleswarm optimization is the best, when the dam is safe.
