Lightning over-voltage protection has always been one of the majorconcerns of the power system researchers. 500kV substation is the load-centersubstation in power system. Its ability to protect the lightning over-voltage isvery important to the safe operation of large electric network and main electricnetwork. There are two source of lightning stroke damage in a substation: directlightning stroke and lightning incoming surge.Because the chances of direct lightning stroke on lines are more than thechances of direct lightning stroke on substation, lightning surges that travel alongthe transmission line to the substation are most common. Lightning Over-voltageis one of the major threats to the equipments of the substations. Therefore,according to the simulation results of lightning over-voltage to the electricalequipments of substations, we can find out the rules of over-voltage'sdistribution so as to confirm the insulation cooperation of involved electricalapparatus in the designing processes, and restrict lightning over-voltage level inboth technical and economical aspects. Thus, we can effectively reduce theinsulation level, manufacturing cost of equipments, and overall investment of theconstruction project.This paper take 500kV Luzhou substation as an example, and takesinternational universal advanced electromagnetic transient calculation programPSCAD/EMTDC together with the theory and technology on EHV power systemto analyze and study the lightning protection problems. By combining the bus connection characteristics of substation electricalapparatus and lightning surge insulation level of all kinds of electrical apparatusin the first phase project, the possibly maximum over-voltage appeared ondifferent equipments under six kinds of operation methods are calculated, and thepossibility of leaving out two groups of bus-bar arrester when the insulatingcooperation of al kinds of electrical apparatus fulfilled the demands under anypossibly operation methods of substation is also analyzed. Our research offerscorrect theoretical basis for project designing and operating safety and reliabilityof the substation.
