Matrix converter is a novel power converter with a new topology, which composed of bidirectional switches that can conduct current on bi-direction. It can implement frequency change directly, and obtain sinusoidal input current and unit power factor. The output frequency can be regulated freely and the energy can flow on bi-direction. Matrix converter is a"green"power converter because it greatly reduces the harmonic and reactive pollution for power grid.This paper introduces the topology and High Frequency Synthesis principle of matrix converter, describes matrix converter's modulation and commutation strategies that have existed at present, specially analyses the Space Vector Modulation and Semi Natural Two Steps commutation strategies. By given the equivalent AC/DC/AC topology of matrix converter, modulates on the part of equivalent VSI and VSR with space vector. On the base of this the indirect Space Vector Modulation is obtained and switches stats combinations is optimized. Associated the semi natural two steps commutation, the commutation of the bidirectional switches with minimize commutation times base on space vector modulation is obtained. This paper simulates the introduced modulation and commutation strategies, establishes the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation model and analyses the input and output performances under the introduced control technology, designs and simulates the input LC filter.Based on the simulation, an experiment equipment of matrix converter is constructed with the common emitter bidirectional switches. The modulation algorithm is implemented on the TMS320LF2407A DSP and the Semi Natural Two Steps commutation strategy is implemented on the CPLD with the state machine design method. So the destination goal of unit power factor, adjustable output amplitude and frequency and perfect output waveform are realized. The results of experiments certificate that the introduced modulation and commutation strategies are feasible.
