With the development of society and increasing demand for communication, a lot of large-space buildings are needed now and in the future. The large-scale steel structures have been used a lot in the public buildings. Building construction of Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and Shanghai 2010 EXPO will promote the development of the large-scale steel structures. There are many erection methods of large-scale steel structures, some of which are very complicated. The variety and complication of the construction methods make the construction procedure difficult to control and difficult to operate. To ensure the construction procedure safe, economical and to shorten the construction period, it is necessary to simulate the whole erection process of the large-scale steel structures before construction. After the simulation, the mechanical behavior and motion characters of large members of the structures will- be understood. The relevant problems which appear during construction can be found. The simulation of construction procedure mostly focuses on the line-model of structure nowadays, but it is not enough for the actual construction control of modern structures. With the development of computer technology, the 3D machine simulation design, in the field of motor and aircraft is used widely and vividly. And it promotes the 3D entity simulation of construction procedure of the large-scale steel structures. With the actuality on research of construction technology and construction simulation methods, the importance of construction simulation is introduced briefly in this paper. Based on Virtual Prototyping principle and Multibody dynamics, the movement simulation in design are understood and explored form the structure construction point of view. After improving the technology of movement simulation in the software COSMOS/Motion, a method using the COSMOS/Motion to simulate the construction procedure of steel structures is proposed. and the operating steps are also instanced. The method can be used to simulate the construction process of large-scale steel structures directly. Then a folding-and-unfolding lifting construction procedure of a reticulated shell structure and a slipping construction procedure of a portal steel structure are simulated in GOSMOS/Motion. After the simulation, the motion state, dynamic behavior, controls parameter of the simulation are recorded and analysed. The pre-warning parameters and motion states for a dangerous construction state of the construction procedure are proposed. Then the weakness and danger period of this construction method can be found. Also, a strategy for pre-warning the dangerous state of the construction procedure of large-scale steel structures is put forward, which is the method of observing the motion state of the construction procedure. At last, this simulation method of the construction procedure of large-scale steel structures is testified by comparing the simulation results with measured results. It indicates a new direction of the 3D entity simulation of the whole construction process of large-scale steel structures.
