In the past few years, with more increased terrorism happens, the disasters aroused by the blasting of the bombs appeared more frequently. A lot of structures are damaged by the explosive load. The way to improve the blast-resistant performance of the important buildings has become an important consideration for structure engineers in the phase of designing. The blast-resistant performance of columns which are the most important component in the whole structure is a crucial factor which influences the safety of the structures subjected to the blast loads. Studying the dynamic responses of columns under the blast loading and improving the blast-resistant performance can prevent the structure from progressive collapse due to the damage of the columns in the blast loading, and give people more time to escape from the building in a dangerous situation.First of all this paper describes the fundamental of explosion wave and the function characteristic of ANSYS/LS-DYNA, and then analyzes five reinforced concrete beams which have been tested by J. Magnusson and M. Hallgren in the laboratory by using the software ANSYS/LS-DYNA. The validity of the non-linear finite element method and correctness of the chosen parameters are validated by the comparison between the results of the analyses and tests. Then the same parameters are used to analyze the dynamic responses of RC columns under three typical blast loads. In order to investigate the most suited spacing of stirrups and the length of the stirrup encryption district, the RC columns with different spaces of stirrups and lengths of the stirrup encryption district are analyzed. At last, some other factors which decide the blast-resistant performance of the RC columns such as the strength of concrete, the ration of axis force, compression of the RC Columns, and the ratio of reinforcement are also analyzed.
