The frequent occurrence of power system blackouts draws researchers'attention on the mechanism of cascading failure and the vulnerability of power system. Based on complex network theory, this paper applies network efficiency as an analytical index to study vulnerable regions of power transmission grid through analyzing topological features and failure simulation. First, we introduce and summarize the application of complex network theory in power systems. Then, based on network topological model, we propose two types of cascading failures models based on line betweenness and theirs corresponding algorithms, and analyze the network static structure characteristics and the dynamic characteristics of power grid, and qualitatively analyze the cascading failure propagation in power system by reason of topological changes. By means of calculating network efficiency and its loss in the failure mode, we can weigh the effect of each line on network performance, and then we can determine the vulnerable regions which affect the performance of power transmission network. Finally, we apply the proposed method to IEEE30, 57, 118 test systems to validate its validity.
