Event Space

This paper begins with the arguments of the building of the new headquarters of CCTV, which was designed by Rem Koolhaas, and puts forward the viewpoint of bringing "events" into architecture, which was raised by Peter Eiseman, Rem Koolhaas, Bernard Tschumi, Daniel Libeskind. They emphasize the process of how various subjective experiences and feelings of human beings form into events. It points out that "Event space" is the contemporary western architectural concept, suggesting the shift from objectivity to subjectivity.From ancient Greece to the organic space of modern architecture, and to the Event Space of the contemporary era, the evolution of the concept of architecture space saw a trend from objectivity to subjectivity.This paper recognizes "event space" through the design concepts and works of some architects. On the philosophical front, using the concepts of deconstruction and phenomenology as well as the theory of performance art, this paper discussed the subjective experience, which was one focus of event space. And Event Space eliminated the contradictions between objectivity and subjectivity of traditional architectures. On the psychological front, using perceptional theories, it recognizes the interaction between subjects and objects, i.e., "automatic convergence", which promotes all kinds of activities of human experiences in architectural space, which form into events.Event Space challenges architectural traditions through the use of Anti context, Montage, Popularizing, and Irony. It values the connection of architecture and human lives, and the subjective experience upon architecture of mankind. Event Space realizes the shift form result to process in architecture.Through the analysis and study of the principles and techniques of Event Space, this paper is expected to help with domestic architecture education and architectural practice. Relating to globalization, architecture saw convergence, which brought to China the new headquarters of CCTV.
