The embankment filling on culvert of Qinhuangdao-Shenyang passage-dedicated had a series of heave problem, which will harm or endanger the stability of the roadbed and safety. Researching into the formation mechanism of embankment in seasonal permafrost regions, and searching for effective prevention measures is one of the most important guarantees for the regular operation of Qinhuangdao-Shenyang railway. Basing on the actual situation of Qinhuangdao-Shenyang railway, the basic formation mechanism of embankment in seasonal permafrost regions is primarily analyzed through Surveying the scene and collecting the relevant information. In the paper, the method of 2-D finite element analysis was conducted to simulate the thermal state of the roadbed with insulations on permafrost. In order to find reasonable thickness, reasonable length and the position of insulations, thereby, ten different finite-element models of embankment are created. By comparing and analyzing the computed results and the change of the raised permafrost table, a conclusion is given that the roadbed with insulations on the permafrost protects the permafrost well under itself, and the rational method for insulation was suggested. Finally, in the light of engineering experience and the calculation results of the paper, several cardinal principles and preventions measures for roadbed damage are suggested.This paper also raised the disadwantages during research and some problems that should be noticed in order that EPS can be made full use of insulating heat.
