The calculation of earth pressure is an important and old issue in applied Geotechnical Engineering. Classical earth pressure theories enunciated by Coulomb and Rankine have been widely used for the earth pressure analysis and the design of the retaining structures because of its simple calculation and clear concept. Coulomb and Rankine , however, are based on the limit equilibrium theory, and the assumptions are too idea, which some of them can never happen in the fact, so the calculation result doesn't accord with the in-site data under the complicated condition. With the current conditions of the increasingly complex and the improvement of construction technology , this method will be increasingly unable to meet engineering requirements. Therefore, based on the previous achievements, the calculation of earth pressure was studied .The calculation of earth pressure is the premise of the design and construction, is the foundation to ensure the project safety and economy. On the current the earth theory is not yet adequate, using the Rankine and Coulomb theory exit great deviatation, the application of energy theory on the retaining wall to optimize the calculation of earth pressure is important.According to the energy theory, the earth pressure problem of retaining wall of tilt circumstance was discussed. Assuming the cracked plane through the walls's heel, a balance equation was established based on energy conservation principle, and the formulas for calculating active earth pressure and passive earth pressure were obtained, while the impact of various parameters was detailed analysised. Comparing with the traditional Rankine theory, Coulomb theory, and the current gravity terminal design and construction standards by specific examples with for comparative analysis, the method of this paper was verified to be correct and feasible.Based on the limit balance equation, through a numble of mathematic transformat, the formulas of rupture angle were obtained, which include active state and passive state under surcharge, and the impact form of various parameters was detailed analysised.Comparing with traditional earth pressure calculation theory of retaining walls , the method of this paper adopt fewer assumptions and more applicable, has guiding significance and assistant value to project design.
