Shell and tube evaporator has already been widely used in many industrial fields such as refrigeration, air-conditioning and chemical industry. With increasingly demanding requirements of lower cost and higher efficiency, however, the classical shell and tube evaporator needs further development and optimization on performance.Firstly, this paper briefly introduces the major kinds of heat exchangers used in domestic commercial chillers and their characteristics.Secondly, it analyzes in details the characteristics of R410A as well as the heat-exchanging performances and costs of tubes with three different diameters which are used most frequently, and concludes that the tube with smaller diameter has more advantages for R410A.Thirdly, by means of Six Sigma (a management method), every parameter influencing the performance of evaporator is analyzed by four steps (definition, measurement, analysis and improvement) and with data support from simulation calculations provided by simulation software at the same time.After a series of analyses, the parameters that can obviously affect the performance are figured out. The optimization solution is provided then after optimized combination of significant parameters and experiments.The optimization solution is proved to be correct and effective by experiments, with which a company can save considerable material costs. Providing a good case for optimization of evaporator, the author hopes that readers can benefit something from this paper.
