In recent years, with the development of highway in our country, more and more high-abutments were constructed in area of mountain. The height and width of many masonry U-shaped abutments have exceeded the reference data of currency graph. Furthermore, according to the investigations, when the height of U-shaped abutment is lower than the 8 meters, it is safe. But when the height of U-shaped abutment is over the 8 meters, especially about 8~20 meters, the cracks will be turn up on the tops front sidewalls. The damage is a common phenomenon. It not only affects the strength and stability of the U-shaped abutment, but also leads to the great economy loss. The strength and stability of the un-reinforced U-shaped abutment and reinforced U-shaped abutment was analyzed by model testing and finite element method simulation. The deformation and destruction pattern of the U-shaped abutment were researched by damage mechanics and fracture mechanics. The research work is focused on the following aspects:①By collecting and analyzing lots of datum related to the damage of the U-shape abutment, the studies level of the deformation and destruction of U-shape abutment was full expounded. The similitude criterions of the model testing are given based on the principle of similitude.②According to the principle of similitude theory and the model testing, some important results was obtained, including the deformation and destruction pattern of un-reinforced U-shaped abutment and reinforced U-shaped abutment and so on.③with the help of 3D finite element numerical simulation, the distributions of displacement field and strain field and stress field were studied, the relations between strength and height and construction of U-shaped abutment was founded out.④The deformation and destruction pattern of the masonry U-shaped abutment were discussed by damage mechanics and fracture mechanics, and contrasted to the results of model testing and numerical simulation. The curve of D—P was obtained.⑤According to the results of model testing and numerical simulation as well as the theory of damage and fracture mechanics, the design method of reinforced abutment was proposed for the engineering.
