Generation expansion planning of power system is directed by systems engineering, using new optimization and computer technology, search a best generation construction scheme to satisfy the load development. The scheme should also satisfy all constraint conditions, reliability target and environment protected demanding. Generation expansion planning is a strategic decision-making of generation disposition in the power system. In other words, it's very important.The core of generation expansion planning is confirming when, where, which type and how much it's generate capacity to construct generations with the development of load in the planning period.For the better plan, generation expansion planning relates to lots of problems such as load forecasting, types of the plant, capacity of the generation, choosing the site of generation, grid expansion planning and reliability computing; it also relates to many departments. To sum up, it is an extraordinary complex task. Owning the complexity of generation expansion planning, we have to predigest it when solve the problem with a variety of classical optimization methods, howbeit, which decrease the precision of planning. Recently, artificial intelligence algorithms have made a rapid progress. This new algorithms can solve some disperse or non-protruding nonlinear system problems, which are different from the classical ones. Through making some researches on them, we can find that excellent applicability in the generation expansion planning. In these algorithms, we imitate biologic characteristics, and then abstract these characteristics. Based on them, some effective search algorithms have been discovered. Besides, kinds of artificial intelligence algorithms have been used in fact wide by wide, such as GA, ES, EP, ANN etc. During this time, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is put forward step by step. If we systematize and standardize these algorithms, studying on their mathematical principle, it will be very important in the theory and practice field that we solve the planning with them.Based on the problem as above, this thesis will study on PSO, GA-PSO, SA-PSO and their application on generation expansion planning. These works are mentioned as follows:(1) The development, status and basic mathematical models of generation expansion planning in this thesis. Varieties of methods to solve the problem are summarized. W hat's more, the differences and features of these methods are given.(2) Research mathematical models of generation expansion planning, principle frame and reliability computing model. Research simulation model of weekly regulation pumped storage power station emphasis, and compare it with daily regulation pumped storage power station, discuss each one's advantages and disadvantages. Comparing the benefit when HP pumped storage power station in that two conditions.(3) Research the basic principle of PSO algorithm and the combination of PSO algorithm and GA, SA algorithm: the GA-PSO algorithm and SA-PSO algorithm. It's the first time that PSO, GA-PSO, SA-PSO are used in this field. The results of five and ten years' generation expansion planning prove these algorithms reasonable.(4) Integrated with analysis of credibility, a practical system 2006-2015 generation expansion planning computed by these methods proves to be credible and practicable(5) These algorithms have some defections as other algorithms. In the end, some ideas are proposed for deep research and to be validated.
