In calculating gear strength, many factors must be taken into consideration. So it is an involuted work for mechanical engineers. Depending upon finite element theory and APDL language, this paper realized the parametric calculation of bending strength and contact strength of involute helical gears. Integration of CAD and CAE of helical gears are realized in Ansys software and the work efficiency is enhanced.Based on the principles of gear meshing and coordinate transformation, mathematical model of involute helical gears was established accurately. In Ansys the three-dimensional parametric models of involute helical gear and conjugate gear were set up by means of APDL language. The place of highest point of single tooth contact on the tooth profile was found out. And the position of corresponding contact lines was obtained by CAD approach. This new approach is simpler than other methods and is prone to specify parametric load. And the program of calculating the bending strength of gear tooth was listed using APDL language. The algorithms of contact problem was studied. And the program of calculating the contact strength of gear teeth was wrote using APDL language. The results of helical gear strength calculated by FEM were compared with the counterpart obtained by traditional methods. The analysis revealed that the former was less than the latter. The results showed the traditional calculation methods are conservative. To a certain degree, this would result in resource waste.
