Study on the consolidation theory and settlement calculation method of the composite foundation of soil-cement deep mixing column with variable cross-section under embankment loading. The paper builds a consolidation model for the new-type composite foundation of soil-cement deep mixing column with variable cross-section, based on one-dimension consolidation theory of the layered foundation; gives answer to single or double side water permeability of the foundation by applying the variable separation method and Laplace transformation; examines the long-term consolidation characteristics of the composite foundation of soil-cement deep mixing column with variable cross-section; compares the consolidation characteristics of the composite foundation of soil-cement deep mixing column with variable and conventional cross-section with those of the natural foundation through theoretical calculation; analyzes the influence of design parameters of the composite foundation of soil-cement deep mixing column with variable cross-section on the consolidation rate of the soil between the columns and the underlayer; brings forward two settlement calculation methods—the column load transfer method and the drainage passage method. The calculated settlement value obtained through load transfer method and the drainage passage method is closer to the actual site one.
