City Gateway Landscape Design Research

City entrance, a space boundary, is the space between a city and its suburban area, that is, between the relatively independent sociological system and the surroundings. The city entrance usually serves as city space for the transportation of people, substance and information, and for various entertainments. As a door to understand the local customs, the city character, the city's physical geography and its unique features, the landscape of a city entrance reflects the image of the city in a large extent. For its environmental significance, unique physical geography, environmental settings, and function demands, the city entrance deserves great concerns in its own environmental quality and the image construction.The city gate landscape, to a certain extent, reflects the open space of the city entrance. And the natural scenery in the outer fringe there plays a significant role in the ecosystem of the city, linking the city with the external environment in harmony. This paper, by means of field study and absorbing previous theoretical achievements, mainly studies the present situations of the urban road entrances in the country. Referring to case studies on relevant cities, the paper studies the planning and design of the landscape in some city road entrances.By adopting the theories and methods of the planning and design of modern landscape, the paper tries to throw a new light on the methods and principles of the city gate landscape. Studying relevant fundamental theories, the author aims to have a further study of the enhancement of the unity of city image, the sustainable development of a city and the city entrance landscape which preserves the historic and cultural tradition of the city and keeps and develops its unique features.By studying the planning and design of the landscape in the entrances of Hefei city, the author gives a further illustration of the application of the concepts, principles and methods in this paper.
