Reactive power is an important factor to the voltage stability, and it is also related to secure and steady operation of the power systems. Plenty of low power factor and fluctuant load in the industrial enterprises cause the generation of a large amount of var. With development of the electric and electronic technology large-power electric and electronic devices which are non-linear and generate a large amount of harmonic during the running are widely used in the industries. Therefore, how to combine reactive power compensation and harmonic suppression is one of the important subjects in the future study of the reactive power compensation technology. In this paper, the development of power theory and reactive power compensation equipment are introduced, and the emphasis is on instantaneous power theory and the TSC Controller based on this theory. In this device, three modules are designed in this paper, including the TSC controller based on LF2407A DSP chip, the peripheral circuit and the main circuit. In terms of software, the data collection software, the calculation method of switch control and the trigger control software are discussed with focus on the design of the turn-on without inrush current. The results of software emulation and measurement of model machine have indicated that this type of TSC provides superior performance of dynamic reactive power compensation .and decreasing inrush current.
