Structural vibration control as a new technology is a feasible method in reducing seismic disaster. Among these methods of structral control , the way using smart material presents superiorities gradually. Magnetorheological (MR) damper is a new control device based on MR fluid . This device has broad usage in future. So the way of using MR damper in structural control has been the focus of investigation of internal and foreign experts. The research of this paper includes three parts below:(1) It generalizes the basic characteristic of MR fluid , working mode of MR damper, including several models of damping force of MR damper, such as Bingham model, modified Bingham model, Bouc-Wen model and modified Bouc-Wen model and so on.(2) Adjacent building model has been established and according to this model ,it constructs the dynamics equation of adjacent building. It analyzes the seismic response of adjacent building under the semi-active control, and shows good results. The analysis chooses threes algorithms including Linear Quadratic Regulator(LQR) Instantaneous Optimal Control (IOC) and Classical Optimal Control (COC) . The input seismic wave is El-Centro Tianjin and taft seismic wave and the semi-active control law is confined amplitude semi-active controlling law. The model of calculating damping force is modified Bouc-Wen model based on MRF-04K MR damper.(3) Based on related concepts and principles of fuzzy control, by choosing different membership functions and dividing inputs into different intervals it gets different fuzzy control strategies. With the different strategies it analyzes the seismic response of adjacent buildings under El-Centro Tianjin and taft seismic wave. It also analyzed the influence of number of fuzzy intervals of input and style of membership function in seismic response of adjacent building in fuzzy control.It gets the conclusion that semi-active control and fuzzy control with MR dampers are all useful methods in controlling seismic response of adjacent building. Both the two ways can change the input current to change the damping force. They can make totally use of the potantial characteristics of MR fluids. And the semi-active control laws in semi-active and style of membership functions in fuzzy control contribute a lot in controlling results, but the number of interval in strategies contributes little.
