In response to the shortage of petroleum and the ever tightening standards for exhaust emissions, especially NOx and particulate matte(rPM) which are becoming extremely severe for diesel, the search for new solutions intensifies all over the world. Ethanol, which was an oxygenated renewable biofuel has the potential of reducing emissions of diesel engines when it blends with diesel. Therefore, more and detailed research work for the performance and emissions of diesel engine fueled with ethanol-diesel fuel has been conductedIn this paper, the engine performance and emissions fueled with ethanol-diesel fuel has been investigated. The experimental investigation was carried on a turbo-charge, water inter-cooled, direct injection (DI) diesel engine. The effects of ethanol volume percentage and combustion parameters on economic performance and emissions were investigated. Based on this investigation, the optimized combustion system of ethanol-diesel engine has been concluded. The results show that the fuel consumption decreases with the increase of ethanol volume percentage at high loads, the percentage of ethanol has little effects on fuel consumption at medium and low loads. Soot emissions from ethanol-diesel fuel decrease compared with those from diesel except at low load mode with low speed. Furthermore, soot emissions decrease with the increase of the percentage of ethanol. HC emissions from ethanol-diesel fuel blend are higher than those from pure diesel. CO emissions decrease compared with those from diesel except at the low speed. NOx emissions decrease compared with those from diesel except in the low load mode with low speed. The effects of the combustion parameters on the engine performance and emissions fueled with ethanol-diesel fuel have been studied. The optimization combustion parameters have been concluded. The results show that it is necessary to increase the cycle fuel to obtain the original engine power .In order to meet the demands of engine power, performance and emissions, it is proposed to adopt the combustion chamber with 60mm diameter and the injector with 945~994 ml per 30s when engine burning E20 fuel.
