Cavity is a common site in engineering. During the cavity digging, the cross sections of the cavity are always irregular shape instead of a circle. At present, much work has been done to investigate the effect of built regularly shaped underground cavity on the surface motion. But, little investigation has been done to arbitrary shaped cavity. Based on this as engineering background, semi-analytical solution to the scattering of plane SH-waves by arbitrary shaped cavity is worked out in this paper. Then, we gives 30 sets of random data whose average shape is circularity. Some pilot studies of arbitrary shape cavity and inclusion are done according to the data. It first breaks the arbitrary shape boundary into limited number of points. Then building up equations on the separate points, we can get over defined system of equations. At last, work out it's least–squares solution, and get the displacement amplitudes on the earth's surface over the cavity or inclusion, with which we can investigate the effect of arbitrary shaped underground cavity on surface motion.
