Pipelines are irreplaceable in oil and natural gas transportation. Due to aging, corrosion, and other man-made damages caused by varieties of reasons, the economic losses and environmental pollutions caused by pipe leaking are huge. Pipeline crack identification technology is thus plays an important role to address the problem. With the development of the guided wave technology, the use of the echoes of a stress wave to detect pipeline cracks is becoming increasingly popular. The technique, based on the principle of propagating of guided waves, detects the echoes by the sensors mounted at the specified locations. The measurements are then used to determine the crack locations. By far the pipeline crack identification technology is relatively new. It is scientifically important to develop some means that can be used for pipeline crack detection. This paper belongs to the basic application of research,it reviews the status of the pipeline crack identification technology and the knowledge of guided waves, and describes the using of the stress wave in the pipeline. Focusing on pipeline cracks detection, this paper describes some work performed on simulations and experiments. The main works introduced in this paper are as follows:1,A one-dimensional model has been established and simplified, the model was simulated by the longitudinal stress wave using numerical difference method. The transmission characteristics of the stress wave in the pipeline have been analyzed. This paper established a mathematical formula for locating the pipe crack location.2,The experiment used the acceleration sensor to collect the stress wave, and the data was processed by band-pass filter.3,The crack location in the pipeline could be detemined by analyzing the principle of the propagation of the stress wave, which is caused by the non-axisymmetric incentive. The results show that with the method described in this paper, the technology of the pipe crack location is successful to use.
