The loess is one kind of typical structural soil, which has special mechanical and engineering characteristic for its unsaturated and structural characteristic. In our country, Loess Plateau and the distribution of loess soil traits area of about 640,000 square kilometers, accounting for 6.3 percent of the land area, most of which is unsaturated soils. As the state's western development strategy implemented, the construction of many infrastructure in this region is needed, so further study of the unsaturated loess is of great significance. In this paper, further study will be started on the base of recent research results of unsaturated loess.Firstly, the basic features of the Loess Plateau is introduced, then, the research results about the unsaturated loess structural characteristic is summed ,and a serious analysis and reflection for the status of the existing research results and ideas is also given in this paper. On the basis of the theory of soil structure potential, considering that the existed outcomes in soil structure characteristic cannot reflect the changing of soil structure when subjecting isotropic stress, and hereby developed the soil structure parameters considering the impact of isotropic stress. At the same time, the initial suction of soil samples were measured, and the relationship between the initial suction of unsaturated soil and moisture or other factors is also discussed here.Secondly, the initial structural of unsaturated loess is studied. By combining the cone penetrometer for consistency test, developed the idea of taking the soil structure parameter as the soil physical property index, which is verified by tests and the results showed these tests method is feasible, from the initial parameters and structural changes with the moisture content of the soil can be a reasonable reflection of the initial structural.
