In this dissertation, the dynamic voltage behavior and recovery strategy are studied, based on the scenario of high proportion of air conditioner for Saudi Electric Company-Western Region (SEC-WR). According to the statistic data provided by Saudi, component-based method is used to develop an A/C dynamic load model which can be applied to transient simulation for PSS/E. SVC is modeled and simulated in PSCAD/EMTDC to validate its effectiveness for voltage stability control. A transfer function is deduced for modeling of SVC in PSS/E. Finally, through the transient stability simulation in PSS/E, we find that, when the proportion of A/C is greater than 80% and without SVC, voltage recovery will be delayed after faults. If we reduce the proportion of A/C to 40%, voltage recovery characteristic will be much better. This shows that the high proportion of A/C is the real cause of delayed voltage recovery. In order to solve the problem, SVC with proper capacity and installing site is proposed for the voltage recovery control. Adopting the proposed control strategy, voltage recovery characteristic can be greatly improved.
