With its rapid development, electrified railway is the dominant way of railway transport since electric traction was implemented in many countries, and electric traction loads have been the main portion in power system. The electrified railway has prominent superiority of carrying capacity, running speed, energy consumption, transport cost and operating condition, so electric locomotive is better than traditional steam locomotive and internal combustion locomotive for traction. However, through the traction substation, the rectifier traction load of low power factor would generate abundant harmonic current and negative-sequence current for single-phase independence in power system. The electric power quality would be deteriorated by the distorted waveform while these currents flow, even produce heavy economic losses for unstable and unsafe operation. Therefore, it is most significant to eliminate the adverse effect on the electric power system from traction power supply system in electrified railway.Aiming to the traction power supply system of electrified railway, those existing comprehensive compensators for traction substations are studied in this paper. Then its compensating result is analyzed after introducing conventional methods for the compensation of reactive component, negative-sequence and harmonic currents. According to the operating test data of some traction substation, the compensating results for variant compensator are obtained through theoretical analysis, system simulation, and comparison of various schemes. At last, a parallel static var generator for electrified railway is proposed to follow the up-to-date development of compensation technique. And its simulation waveforms also show the availability of this compensation scheme.
