When being used to calculate the foundation stress, the method of actual criterion assumed that the rubble bed is rigid. Although it refers the weight of the rubble bed and the stress on the top, the earth pressure in front and back of the rubble bed isn't considered. With the development of the great gravity wharf, the depth of rubble bed increases, so the earth pressure in front and back of the rubble bed also increases. Hence, there must be some difference between the criterion method and the actual situation. The paper analyzes the affect of the earth pressure to the distribution of foundation stress by systemic study and calculation. According to the result of engineering FEM program PLAXIS, a more rational method is put forward.Firstly, considering the earth pressure in front and back of the rubble bed, a new method is brought forward under the assumption of rigid rubble bed referred by criterion method. By contrast with the result of several actual engineering projects, it is found that the affect of the earth pressure to the distribution of foundation stress is obvious, so the earth pressure can't be ignored.Secondly, stress distribution in the rubble bed of the gravity wharf is analyzed by engineering FEM program PLAXIS. Through the change of the parameters in the FEM models, the factors which affect the stress distribution are discussed. Finally, according the result of stress distribution by PLAXIS, an improved method with three controlling point is brought forward, in which the earth pressure in front and back of the rubble bed is taken into consideration. By contrast with the results of several actual engineering projects, it is proved that this new method can reflect the actual stress distribution in the rubble bed more exactly than the criterion method. This paper improves the calculation theory of deep rubble bed by theoretical analysis and numerical computation. By contrast with several actual engineering projects, it is proved that the new improved calculation theory is of great value.
