The pulse tube cooler (PTC) is a mini-type refrigerator without moving parts at low temperature. The lack of cold moving parts has allowed it to have some advantages of low mechanical vibration, high reliability, long lifetime, low electromagnetic noise and so on. So it has been researched by many countries and has made a great achievement so far. With the development of high temperature superconductivity, it is important to increase the cooling capacity of PTC at 20K. In this paper, some works has done based on theoretical and experimental research to the self-design of single PTC in ICST. A commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software package (FLUENT) is used to simulate PTC at different operating condition and the performance of the single stage PTC has been tested. The works done are as follows.Firstly, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) soft package FLUENT has been applied for research of the orifice pulse tube cooler system. Results show that the optimum valve setting of orifice can optimize the PTC. The results of mass flow rate in orifice can be carried out. What's more, results show that due to occurrence of vortex induced from the uneven temperature distribution in the cross section area of heat exchanger, which makes the temperature fluctuate acutely.Secondly, some kinds of energy loss include resistance loss and no-work volume loss are calculated. Optimum platform is built and have had better results.Lastly, the capability of the single stage PTC is tested. It gets the lowest temperature of 18.3 K at no-loads by optimize the valve setting of orifice and double-inlet.
