Due to the rapid development of economy in coastal areas and the exploitation of offshore islands, many river-spanning/sea-spanning bridges are being constructed. It is absolutely necessary to conduct precise and complete evaluation of projects' proposals before implementing those projects. Furthermore, with the quick development of marine simulator in China, it is becoming extremely important to further demonstrate engineering scheme using marine simulator by means of simulation experiment of bridge navigation conditions. Therefore, it is definitely valuable to study the flow field model around the bridge piers and apply it to the evaluation and demonstration of marine simulator.Nowadays, the study on flow field model around piers is rare. However, in most cases, the bridge piers are usually generalized in the numerical simulation about the pier issue. In this essay, the current most popular numerical models will be studied in the aspect of the hydrodynamic numerical simulation. Additionally, a numerical model which could be applied to most piers will also be established. This model is based on triangle meshes, finite volume method and explicit difference solving governing equations for the sea while highlighting the advantages of triangle meshes that fit complex border. Meanwhile, in order to fit pier shape, reduce computational time and improve calculation accuracy, the denser grid method is adopted to partially densify the water area around the piers. Eventually, in the Visuall C++ integrated development environment, numerical operation and flow show of research waters would be accomplished.By analyzing and comparing the calculation results of simulation, it is concluded that the flow around phenomenon appears because the drag force on flow is increased and the flow section area is decreased by the pier built in the sea, the faster the flow rate is, the more obviously the flow around is, the impact upon the hydrodynamic conditions does happen, but it is only limited to the surrounding sea area. And the calculation results of flow field about the actual engineering scheme were applicated to marine simulator, the simulation experiments of ship maneuvering were doing, and the results showed that the flow field surrounding the bridge piers has certain influence to ships' navigation safety, but it is only limited to the surrounding sea area, and nearly no effect to the area far away from the bridge pier. Conclusively, the model can basically simulate the flow field change around the piers. However, considering the fluent three -dimensional structure, further studies about this model should be conducted in order to increase the precision of the result to satisfy the accuracy requirement of the simulation experiment using the navigation simulator for navigation appraisal of river-spanning/sea-spanning bridges.
