Electronic Power Transformer (EPT) is a new type of transformer. Compared with traditional transformer, EPT has a lot of advantages, such as smaller size and better maneuverability. Therefore, it is believed that EPT will function in the future Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS), instead of traditional transformer. However, there are still a lot of practical problems to solve before that. For example, the relay protection over the internal fault of the high-frequency transformer of EPT is needed, which is also the capital work of this paper.In this paper, the basic theory of EPT is introduced, and the two typical schemes of EPT are investigated in detail. As a result, the feasibility of EPT is proved, and its future research directions are proposed, which include the research of the relay protection of the internal fault of the high-frequency transformer of EPT.By referring to the research work on the traditional transformer internal fault, the research methods on the internal fault of the high-frequency transformer of EPT are proposed, which include the simulation models of the high-frequency transformer of EPT under kinds of operating conditions, and the main relay protection-current differential protection. At last, a simulation experiment using Matlab is conducted, and the result of the experiment proves that the current differential protection is more effective that the main relay protection of traditional transformer.
