With the fast development of our economy, the power demand increases with incredible speed, and the power system is becoming a immense one. At the same time our power system has many characters, such as high voltage, long transfer line, deregulated and interconnected, and the running condition usually is overload. So, it's more probability to have some kind of voltage instability contingency, and reliability of power system is more important in the complex power system.Voltage collapse in threatening the stability of power system, and it is our researchers'duty to make its mechanism clear and prevent its occurrence.In this paper we summarized the contents and present status of the research in static voltage stability, then the relationship between reactive power and voltage stability, and the compensation of reactive power introduced. We amply introduced the study methods of voltage stability and point out the defaults of the mentioned methods. The mathematic model of some widely used index in the analysis of static voltage stability, such as margin index, sensitivity index, eigenvalue, singular value, are studied. In order to obtain the accurate information of voltage stability, we should repeatedly use several indexes to analyze the operation condition.Then, the method of static voltage stability analysis based on the sensitivity of the minimum singular value is proposed, and its detailed mathematic model and the program flow diagram are given in this paper, then the using in the analysis of voltage stability is introduced. We program to realize the analysis method.Finally, using the mentioned method, we find out the weak buses and area of IEEE30 buses system and IEEE57 buses system. After compensating reactive power to the weakest bus, both the stability of the system and node voltage are strengthened. The availability of this analysis method is certified according to the analysis and calculation of the IEEE 57 buses system and IEEE 30 buses system. The sensitivity of the minimum singular value can be implemented for online use and the planning of power system.
