As a new type of underwater Acoustic receiver, vector hydrophone was regarded by researchers. Along with the technology of vector hydrophone and military affairs developing, vector hydrophone is abroad applied in underwater Acoustic field.Firstly, the principles and characteristics about column type vector hydrophone are studied in this paper. The theory of rigid column receiving capability, the principles of acceleration sensor, the characteristic parameters of vector hydrophone and the relationships of sensitivities in sound field are analyzed.Secondly, a kind of folding-shell acceleration sensors has been designed and produced, which is based on the principle of acceleration sensors associated the traditional center-compressed acceleration sensors. The folding-shell acceleration sensor has a smaller size in longitudinal dimension and a higher space utilization ratio compared with traditional center-compressed acceleration sensors.The column type vector hydrophone using four folding-shell acceleration sensors has been produced and its sensitivities and directivities have been tested.
