Thoughts On Chinese Contemporary Architectures

Since the 1980s when China started its reform and opening-up, tremendous changes have taken place in China. The economic and social developments have also changed people's life and ideology. Architecture, as a subject affecting both the spiritual and material aspects of humans, has also ushered in a new age with vitality and openness. Old cities are taking on new appearances and new buildings are rising in succession. The architecture industry has undergone a rapid development, with a large number of new buildings being constructed. More profound and comprehensive architectural history and theoretical researches that bloom freely enable the industry to achieve unprecedented success. However, during the 20-year development, among the general trend of development, the architecture industry has also go through some setbacks, which are due to the limit of the art of architecture itself on the one hand and the interference of non-academic factors on the other hand. Meanwhile, with the arrival of"globalization", people have been aware that the damages to natural resources and cultural heritages incurred during the economic development have triggered a range of issues including the exploration and utilization of natural resources, protection and destruction of biological environment, adjustment and layout of the city systems as well as the inheritance and development of culture and art. Therefore, these changes have brought out new phenomena and problems to the architecture industry. These serious conflicts and questions request us to rethink and relocate China's architecture in such an age of globalization. Studies and thoughts over these questions have been also of theoretical and practical significance.With a view to studying the development course of architecture, the paper starts with the general background of architectural creation. Through analysis, comparison and demonstration of the current architectural culture, architectural techniques, architectural works, architectural theories, architects, and the enviroment of creation, the paper sorts out and summarizes a large quantity of literatures and reveals the characters of China's contemporary architectures reflected in different environments of creation, in expectation of arousing people's thoughts. Meanwhile, the paper also analyze and discuss the common problems in the development of China's contemporary architectures, and puts forward some ideas and countermeasures to arouse our consensus.
