Power flow calculation is one of the basic electrical calculations for research on steady operation in power systems. Recently, with the emergency of large-scale interconnected electrical power networks, rapid power flow calculation have become the most important issue for real-time control of power system. But, traditional serial algorithms for power flow calculation cannot meet requirements of control and operation in modern power systems. With the continuing development of parallel processing technology, parallel algorithms are introduced into the research area of power flow calculation. Parallel algorithms provide an efficient way and useful tools for real-time power flow calculation. This paper discusses the mathematics model of power flow calculation and its common solutions, and discusses network partitioning, multiple factoring, sparse vectors and inverse matrices and some other power flow parallel algorithms. The merits and demerits of these algorithms are also presented. The paper proposes a spectrum method applied in network partitioning On the basis of researching partitioning method. Spectrum algorithm is one of the algorithms which can be used to partition complex networks. After partition, there are close connections between the nodes inside the subnet, but sparse between the subnets. The paper takes improved injection power as coordinational variables in cutting branches. This coordinational variables makes partition network more equal to primary network.Based on the two points above, this paper proposes a new algorithm based on spectrum algorithm and improved injection power. In the end of the paper, IEEE 14-nodes system, 30-nodes system and 57-nodes system are taken as simulation and calculation examples. As shown in the calculation results of typical examples, Spectrum algorithm can averagely partition the power networks with sparse connections among subnets, and calculation jobs of different parallel PCs are balance. So it can advance the speed of power flow calculation, and make the power flow convergent as soon as possible. The results also show that taking improved injection powers as the coordinational variables is an effective method in power plow parallel calculation.
