Wire ropes are flexible members that are widely used in many industries and sectors such as mining, metallurgy, traffic, construction, tourism and so on. The performance of wire ropes has great effects on people's benefits, life and properties. In order to avoid accidents caused by failure of wire ropes, it is essential to improve examination methods for mechanical properties besides controlling the design and manufacture of wire ropes. This dissertation presents the design of a new type of wire-rope test-bed that is aimed at finding out appropriate examination methods for mechanical properties of wire ropes.Firstly, after analysis of structure characters of traditional test-beds, it is concluded that they present shortcomings such as little loading capacity, inconvenient adjustment of preloading wire rope and bad simulation of real working conditions. In order to avoid these disadvantages, the new design scheme is suggested, which indicates that the test-bed not only has the operation mode of double-flywheels drive and double-drums linkage but also has structure characters of preloading pulley placed vertically and horizontal loading by screws. Then, concrete design schemes of primary parts of the test-bed including flywheel units, traversing drum shafting, shock drum shafting, thrust pulley units and loading mechanisms are introduced, which finishes the general design of the test-bed. At last, intensity and stiffness of thrust pulley units and loading mechanisms that must meet high requirements of mechanical properties are analyzed with finite element analysis software ANSYS, which shows the stress distribution and deformation fringes of these parts.The achievements of the research presented in this dissertation will be beneficial to the development of wire-rope test technology and devices in some extent, offering certain preference values for the design of test-beds for ropes.
