The airborne laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing technique may be a beneficial supplement to existing bathymetric measuring technique. As the underwater sound source of laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing system, the characteristics of optoacoustic source must be study first of all. It is important for selecting right excitation condition and designing suited sound receiving system. In this paper, the characteristics of optoacoustic source are studied, whose aim is to guide practical application of laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing. Firstly, the basic theories of laser excitateding sound are studied synoptically. Secondly, qualitative analysis and experimental test of optoacoustic source's characteristics are completed. Lastly, the research results are applied to designing the laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing system which are used to carry out the laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing experiment for confirming these research results. This paper acquires the law of relation between optoacoustic source's characteristics and excitation condition. Testing resules are accordant with theoretic results. Correctness of optoacoustic source's characteristics results and feasibility of laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing technique are proved farther through the laser/acoustic bathymetric sensing experiment.
