With the development of interconnected power grids in China, the power systems are becorhing larger and more complex. Therefore, the stability phenomenon of power systems are becoming more familiar, especially the low frequency oscillation. The study of the low frequency oscillation in power system is becoming more and more. This paper is going on under such background, and the main works are organized as using static var compensator(SVC) on damping power system low frequency oscillations. Firstly establishing the supplementary controller for the damping of power system oscillation(PSDC).The LMI method is used to design the PSDC signals and solve the time-delayed problem. Then the model of SVC is established using the power system block of Matlab.By time-domain simulations of the two machine system and four machine two areas system, the effectiveness of the SVC model is proved, and the damping characteristics of different signals are compared.Simulation results indicate the optimal signal for PSDC.
