With the development of high performance magnetic materials and declining prices, permanent magnet motors have been used more and more widely. But its magnetic field is difficult to adjust, which has a great impact on the development and the application of it. The hybrid excitation synchronous motor has changed the traditional single electrical excitation way and permanent excitation mode, and combined the advantages of both. Its magnetic field can be adjusted easily, and the technical performance has been improved, so the bybrid-excitation synchronous motor will have a nice application prospect. The hybrid-excitation synchronous generator studied in this paper has the same stator structure as general synchronous generator, but the rotor consists of two parts, and they are the permanent part and the electrically-excited part, both of which share one armature. The output voltage can be kept constant by regulating the excitation current of the electrically-excited part when the load or the speed varies.Based on studying the basic structure and operating principle of the hybrid excitation synchronous generator, the electromagnetic design method was researched in this paper. We used to design the hybrid-excitation synchronous generator by dividing it into a permanent magnet generator and an electrical excitation generator, and designing them separately. However, this method has some disadvantages and limitations. So a new kind of design method was proposed in this paper. And the details of the specific design process and relevant important parameters'calculation method were also introduced. In order to improve the efficiency of design, an electromagnetic design software was developed with the Visual Basic 6.0. A sample generator has been designed, which requires constant output voltage and rated output power from 2000rad/min to 6000rad/min.The electromagnetic field of the sample generator has been analyzed in detail by using the finite element analysis software Maxwell 2D. The result of the analysis was used to check back the result of the electromagnetic design. And the test result on the sample generator indicates that it meets the design requirements, and proved the accuracy of the software developed in this paper.
