Since the middle of last century, with the development of modernism, there has been a mighty storm of western buildings in the architecture industry and formed a one-side culture assimilation. In this circumstance, buildings all over the world become convergence, leading to a deficiency of regional features, especially in China. Facing the mighty momentum in the west, architecture in China obeyed and even lost itself rather than shape self-awareness during economy development and urbanization. Not only urban planning but also individual construction imitated western mode. Though some architects with regional sensibility criticized this phenomenon to some extent, the effect was not obvious. Meanwhile, the practice of our regional architecture remained at a lag phase. With few attempts, most of them remain on the surface of sign shift and didn't grasp the essentials.. Companying the upsurge of post-modernism, the significance of architecture is re-recognized by the world. Both Japan and Southeast Asia began doing research of their regional architecture ahead of China, thus many architects who valued regional characters became famous and their works deserve our studies. The author, based on the critical regionalism, considered regional theories of architects of all countries in modern times, has a purpose of providing supports for domestic research in regional constructions. He aids to re-emphasize the importance of building regional characters and the significance of architects'self regional sensibility. The author also discusses how to re-interpret the definition of region on the premise of insisting regional architecture modernization and using new technology and conception. The author emphasizes the context in architecture and raises the status of building users to a higher level. He re-mentions that the existence of architecture is neither the trumpeting of architects'charisma nor a splurge of a single city, but to provide service for consumers, which is exactly the idea we ignore during large-scale urbanization. Now it is necessary that we re-consider the question that why our constructions and cities exist. However, the author's opinion is not opposed to the mingle of architecture culture, but insists that cultures should be inclusive. He believes that the inclusive should not be unilateral input but mutual acception on the basis of preserving own characters. Just as the critical regionalism shows us, there is contradictory between insisting regionalism and modernization. However this contradictory is the internal motivation of architecture development and will help architectur get diversified and charming.
